Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana Linn), regarded as the "Queen of Fruits," is native to the Malay Archipelago and Indonesia. Alpha-mangostin, as a xanthone derivative from the Mangosteen Extract, was found by scientists to have effective chemopreventive effects in their short-term colon carcinogenesis bioassay system. Alpha-mangostin was also proven to have strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus.
